There are some players we’ll always look up to. Peter Crouch is one of them, and not just for the obvious reason.
After making a slow start in the lower leagues with Dulwich Hamlet and IFK Hasselholm in Sweden, Crouchy finally got a proper run out at QPR before moving on to Portsmouth and then Aston Villa, where he made his Prem debut.
Within a decade he became a proud member of the 100 Premier League goals club, playing for seven different teams. He was a fan favourite at each and every one, being crowned player of the season for three of them.
At Liverpool he found time to play in a Champions League final, win the FA Cup, and score a perfect hat-trick v Arsenal. The streets will never forget his overhead kick v Galatasaray.
His partnership with Jermain Defoe, urged on by Harry Redknapp in a puffer jacket, both at Portsmouth and then Tottenham, is pure Premier League nostalgia. At Spurs, he bagged the goal that got them back in the Champions League for the first time in 40 years.
But Crouchy really found his considerable stride at Stoke City, becoming their leading Premier League goalscorer, including a ridiculous volley v Man City, and breaking a Guinness World Record for headed goals.
He also managed to score at a rate of more than a goal every other game for England, including one in the World Cup. A decent return for someone tarnished with the “good touch for a big man” brush.
In short (ironically), Crouchy was loved because he was a big man, who was as much an everyman as he was a journeyman. His podcast is worth a listen too.
